Griha pravesh: stepping into a new home
Moving into a new home is one of the happiest milestones for any family. In Hindu tradition, the first entry into a new house is done with a griha pravesh ceremony on an auspicious muhurat. The lady of the house often enters first, sometimes kicking a kalash filled with rice, a Ganesh puja and vastu shanti puja are performed, and in many homes milk is boiled over in the new kitchen as a sign of abundance. In Gujarat the ceremony is often called vastu puja or vastu shanti, while in North India it is widely known as griha pravesh or grih pravesh puja.
After the puja, relatives and friends come to see the home, take prasad and share a meal. A clear invitation helps everyone reach at the right time, especially since the puja muhurat is fixed.
What to include
- A blessing line such as "|| Shri Ganeshaya Namah ||" or "Shubh Griha Pravesh".

When to send and reminders
Once the muhurat is fixed, send the card about one to two weeks ahead. Because new homes can be hard to find, share a location pin along with the card, and send a reminder the day before with directions. On the day itself, a short message like "Puja has started, please come" helps late guests. Afterwards, a thank-you message with a photo of the family in front of the new home is a nice touch.
Etiquette for housewarming invitations
Invite your new neighbours too. It is a warm way to start your life in a new society. Mention whether the gathering is for the puja only or includes a meal, so guests can plan. If space is limited, you may invite close family for the puja and others for an evening get-together, with clear timings on separate cards. Guests traditionally bring a small gift for the new home, but it is never compulsory, and some hosts write "Your blessings are enough".
Remember that many elderly relatives prefer a phone call. A card on WhatsApp followed by a short call to the elders is a respectful combination.

- Incomplete address: a new society may not show up on maps yet. Write the society name, wing, flat number and a well-known landmark.
- Missing the muhurat time: the puja begins at a fixed time, so guests who wish to attend the puja must know it clearly.
- No meal information: mention whether lunch or dinner is served, or only prasad.
- Forgetting the society's rules: some buildings have limited parking or lift timings. A short note saves guests trouble.

For relatives: "Namaste Mama ji, with God's grace we have bought our own home in Gurugram. The griha pravesh puja is on 12 November at 9 AM, followed by lunch. Please come with Mami ji and bless us. Griha pravesh for a rented home or renovated house
Many families also perform a small puja when moving into a rented flat or after a major renovation of the old home. The invitation can be simpler in such cases, often just for close family and neighbours. You can use the same card maker, change the heading line to "Vastu Puja" or "Satyanarayan Katha", and keep the wording short and warm.
If you are moving to a new city, a housewarming is also a lovely way to meet new neighbours. Leaving a printed copy of the card at the neighbouring doors, along with a small box of sweets, is a thoughtful gesture that is always remembered.
