The story of the goddess

A bell-shaped half moon adorns the goddess's forehead, which gives her the name Chandraghanta. Parvati took this form at the time of her marriage to Shiva. She rides a tiger or lion and carries weapons in her ten hands. It is believed that the ring of her bell sends evil forces fleeing. Even while ready for battle her face stays peaceful, a reminder that true strength makes devotees fearless rather than afraid.

How to do the puja

Ringing a bell during the puja is considered special on this day. Offer red flowers and kheer made with milk. Light a ghee lamp and recite the Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa.

Mantra

ॐ देवी चन्द्रघण्टायै नमः

Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah
