The story of the goddess
Skanda is another name for Lord Kartikeya, and as his mother the goddess is called Skandamata. Kartikeya became commander of the gods' army and defeated the demon Tarakasura. The infant Skanda sits in her lap. She is seated on a lotus, which is why she is also called Padmasana Devi, and her vehicle is the lion. Worshipping her is believed to bless families with children, and the young Kartikeya is honoured along with her.
How to do the puja
Offer yellow flowers and bananas as bhog. Have the children of the family sit with you for the puja and seek blessings for them. Light a lamp, chant the mantra and perform the aarti.
