The story of the goddess
The sage Katyayana performed penance hoping the goddess would be born as his daughter. Because she appeared in his ashram, she came to be called Katyayani. When the demon Mahishasura was tormenting the gods, Maa Katyayani fought him and killed him. It is believed that the gopis of Vrindavan worshipped her on the banks of the Yamuna, praying for Krishna as their husband. For this reason, she is also worshipped by those hoping for a good life partner. She rides a lion.
