The story of the goddess
Maa Kalaratri is as dark as the night, with loose hair and three eyes. The story goes that every drop of blood from the demon Raktabeej gave rise to a new demon. The goddess took the form of Kalaratri to put an end to him. Her vehicle is the donkey. Despite her fearsome appearance she always blesses her devotees, which is why she is also called Shubhankari, the one who does good. Her worship is believed to remove fear and negativity.
How to do the puja
Offer jaggery as bhog along with night-blooming jasmine or red flowers. There is a tradition of keeping a lamp lit at night on this day. Chant the mantra and pray for peace in your home.
