The story of the goddess
Years of harsh penance had darkened Parvati's complexion. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva bathed her in the waters of the Ganga, and she became radiant and fair. From then on she was known as Mahagauri. She wears white and rides a bull, and her form is calm and full of compassion. Her worship is believed to wash away old sorrows and bring a clear mind.
How to do the puja
Offer coconut as bhog along with white or pink flowers. Families who perform Kanya Pujan on Ashtami invite nine girls aged 2 to 10 and one boy home, wash their feet, apply tilak, serve them halwa, puri and chana, and give them gifts. Many homes also hold a havan on this day.
Mantra
ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः
